Candidate Profile

Why do you want to be an MSYP?

I want to be an MSYP because I want to ensure that the voices of the younger generation aren’t just heard but properly accounted for and taken into action. I don’t just want the youth of Scotland to be heard and then be told that their opinions can’t be taken into action, that is why when I am told no by decision makers I will fight back and do what can be done to come to a compromise or to find another way to take Scotland’s youth voice into visible and noticeable results. I want to become an MSYP as it aligns with some of my deepest passions: Youth Voice, Politics and Making Things Happen therefore standing to become an MSYP was a no brainer for me.

How will you consult with the young people in your area or organisation to ensure that they are represented well and their voices are heard?

The young people I will hopefully get the opportunity to represent will be able to express their concerns directly to me through multiple different methods. One way will be to contact me via direct message through any of my SYP social media accounts. (Instagram & TikTok: oscarl.syp). If elected I will use my SYP email address for people to get in touch, however young people may not want to reach out initially and for those who may not wish to be known, I am more than willing to request schools across East Lothian to send out a monthly anonymous google form to their students, where they can express their concerns and top priority issues. I am very active on social media and on my email so you can always trust me to respond, read, acknowledge and take action on your issues.

Why should someone vote for you?

Employment. Young people in East Lothian find it extremely difficult to gain employment and work experience. To help young people get into work I plan to pressure the government and decision makers relentlessly to take action and encourage businesses to create more training and experience opportunities which will help young people be accepted into employment, as well as this I will also pressure the government to make businesses create more entry level positions with priority for youths.

As for Transport I will campaign non-stop for young scot card holders in East Lothian to be able to access trams for free in Edinburgh. Young people in East Lothian deserve this opportunity as well because they have the need to work, shop, dine, and also attend internships and open days just as much as the young people in Edinburgh.

Regarding Education it has come to my attention that East Lothian faces significant funding pressures as a growing council area. Making it one of the proportionally poorest councils in Scotland. As a result of this our crucial education services don’t receive the funding they deserve. So alongside the council I will campaign for fairer funding for our council and our schools so you, the young people, can feel the benefit too.
