Why do you want to be an MSYP?
I have always been completely enchanted by people and how society organises itself. Democracy and politics are two of the ways in which we do this, and laws have a huge effect on how we live our lives and even our morality. But the more I learned about politics the more I noticed a disconnect between average people and those in power. This can lead to distrust and political disengagement. I want to become an MSYP because I want to help bridge this gap, to inspire young people to shape the world around them in whichever ways they can, whether that be joining pressure groups, contacting representatives or even just educating those around them. Sometimes we just need to know where to start, who to turn to and what to do to remind people we are not bystanders in the society we live in.
How will you consult with the young people in your area or organisation to ensure that they are represented well and their voices are heard?
Listening is the most important part of any form of representation. Girls deserve a place to be heard, for those ideas to turn into action and to see the power that their voice holds in making real change for young people.
This is why it is extremely important to have several forms of communication open with those in my constituency. These will include:
- Regular opinion polls and action updates in the Girlguiding Scotland newsletter.
- An online space for me to share my progress as your representative, and how your opinions are communicated to those in power. Find me on Youtube: @Amily.MSYP1
- In-person meetings with units throughout the North East of Scotland
Why should someone vote for you?
Being a representative means doing more than just speaking on the behalf of others. I don't want to just speak for you, I want to speak with you, open the doors for you to create the change you want to see in the world. Being passionate about youth involvement in politics and activism, I want to connect you with decision makers, organisations, and the opportunities we need to create those changes.
I will dedicate myself to transparency as your MSYP. You will know what is happening, who your ideas have been taken to, and what else you can do to ensure a shift in society.
