East Kilbride
Why do you want to be an MSYP?
As a young woman in Scotland, I can recognise females are consistently underrepresented in our political landscape. I would like to change this by putting myself forward as an SYP candidate for East Kilbride. I am often described as a very passionate, dedicated and determined person and would love to apply these qualities to issues that the youth of East Kilbride experience with the goal of helping our community and making East Kilbride an enjoyable and safe environment to grow up.
How will you consult with the young people in your area or organisation to ensure that they are represented well and their voices are heard?
In East Kilbride, I realise our young people are busy and occupied with their own personal activities and lives which may be a problem when considering how they might be able to attend surgeries with an msyp, possibly on the other side of the town! If elected, I’d like to implement a designated pupil at each EK high school that can take feedback from students and can report back to the MSYPs to ensure every young person has access to making their voice heard. In the age of social media, I’d also like to take feedback through messages and possibly Instagram Livestreams so to interact with youth in real time while making representation accessible.
Why should someone vote for you?
As a creative, confident young person I promise to work to deliver a more vibrant, inclusive town that focuses on helping our youth and creating opportunities for all of us to thrive.
Our town has a serious issue with litter and fly-tipping, demonstrating a lack of respect to the youth in EK. I want to promote education surrounding this issue and encourage people to respect our surroundings to make East Kilbride a cleaner, brighter town.
I’d also like to highlight the employment struggles our youth face due to a lack of opportunities to develop skills and being unable to join the workforce based on our lack of experience. To improve this, I’d like to collaborate with local businesses to introduce positions specifically for young people, while allowing young people to hand in physical CVs for those without access to digital platforms.
Our community is also filled with a variety of talented young people making equality vital for those often underrepresented- such as our LGBTQ+ youth, young women and young people with disabilities to ensure they feel confident, valued and supported in our society while being granted the same opportunities and recognition as the rest of our youth.
