Candidate Profile

Why do you want to be an MSYP?

I want to become an MSYP because I am passionate about bridging the gap between young people and the government, ensuring that our voices are not only heard but acted upon. As a member of this community, I understand the issues young people face, and I believe that by listening to my constituents and working collaboratively, we can create meaningful, lasting change. As MSYP for Edinburgh North Western, I would use my platform to champion equality, health and wellbeing, and democracy, ensuring that the issues affecting young people are represented in wider discussions and decision-making. Most importantly, I want to inspire more young people to engage with politics by making it understandable, I would consider it a privilege to represent the community, and I am committed to listening to all voices, advocating for change and ensuring that every young person feels empowered to have their say.

How will you consult with the young people in your area or organisation to ensure that they are represented well and their voices are heard?

Consulting young people is a priority, and I would use various methods to ensure it’s as accessible as possible. I aim to utilise social media to gather opinions, and surveys to let people voice their concerns without fear of judgement. I value personal engagement and hope to meet and speak directly to constituents by visiting community events and youth clubs. I intend to make a conscious effort to reach out to underrepresented groups, listening to their unique perspectives so that nobody feels overlooked. I believe an important part of outreach is ensuring that young people know they are genuinely being listened to. I would regularly report on progress and the actions taken in response to feedback. I would also remain open to criticism and suggestions, holding myself accountable, building trust within the constituency and ensuring that young people see the influence of their voices in the Scottish Youth Parliament’s mission.

Why should someone vote for you?

I am not afraid to raise uncomfortable or difficult topics if I believe doing so could lead to positive change. I am also a good listener, and I believe there is a significant difference between simply listening to young people and truly hearing their concerns, understanding their experiences and taking action to address them.
If elected as MSYP, I would not make unrealistic promises about what I could achieve. Instead, I would promise to approach every opportunity with dedication, determination and a genuine commitment to making a difference.
I believe I would make a strong MSYP because I have ideas for positive change and a genuine passion for mental health and equality, regardless of someone’s background or circumstances. I want to help create an environment where every young person feels supported and confident enough express themselves.
Above all, I have an open mind and a willingness to learn from others. I understand that representing young people means recognising perspectives beyond my own, and I would always strive to represent my constituents fairly, and honestly. Overall, I want to be an outlet for your voices and opinions but most importantly, a representative you can trust.
